AIVC Endorses Navy Iraq Vet in Maryland US Senate Race

Fishkill, NY (January 9, 2012): Afghanistan & Iraq Veterans for Congress political action committee (AIVC) today announced the endorsement of Richard Douglas for US Senator in Maryland. 

Douglas, who is running against Democrat incumbent Ben Cardin, enlisted in the US Navy at age 17 and served on a submarine during the 1970s.  After the attacks of 9/11, he was recalled to active duty in the Navy and served in Baghdad, Iraq where he helped the Iraqi Defense Ministry establish a Special Operations headquarters cell.  In his diverse civilian career, he has worked as a Foreign Service officer, at the Criminal Division of the US Justice Department, as Chief Counsel for Senator Jesse Helms at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Counter-narcotics. 

“Growing up in an Army family instilled core, conservative values in Richard Douglas. He has fought tirelessly to ensure the future of this great nation, and will continue to do so once elected.  In these challenging times, it is comforting to have the opportunity to send to Washington a man who has for decades answered every time his country called,” said AIVC founder Kieran Michael Lalor.

Of AIVC’s endorsement Douglas said, “AIVC has a terrific track record of supporting successful veteran candidates in primaries and general elections. I am pleased to be a part of AIVC’s brotherhood, and will do my best to return a strong voice for Maryland voters in the U.S. Senate.”

Concluded Lalor, “Richard Douglas has done it all.  His unique and deep military, intelligence and legal experience have him well prepared to immediately become an effective conservative leader in the US Senate.”
